Chandogya Upanishad 6.11.2

6.11.2 Uddalaka Aruni to Shvetaketu

asya yadekāṃ śākhāṃ jīvo jahātyatha sā śuṣyati | dvitīyāṃ jahātyatha sā śuṣyati | tṛtīyāṃ jahātyatha sā śuṣyati | sarvaṃ jahāti sarvaḥ śuṣyati ||

If the life leaves one branch of it, that branch dries up; if it leaves a second, that dries up; if it leaves a third, that dries up. If it leaves the whole, the whole tree dries up.

If you are grieving: this passage speaks of the Self that does not die; it does not ask you to stop mourning or to hurry past the loss. If thoughts of death trouble you, call Tele-MANAS 14416.

Meaning today and context

The body lives only while life is in it. What we call death is the life leaving the form, not the life itself coming to an end.

Chandogya 6.11.2: continuing the tree illustration: whichever branch the life leaves dries up; when it leaves the whole tree, the whole tree dries up.
