"Understanding is greater than meditation. By understanding one understands the Ṛgveda, the Yajurveda, the Sāmaveda, the Atharvaṇa as the fourth, the epics and lore as the fifth, and all the other sciences; heaven and earth, wind and space, water and fire, gods and humans, cattle and birds, grasses and trees, wild beasts down to worms, moths and ants; right and wrong, true and false, good and bad, the pleasant and the unpleasant; food and its savour, this world and the next. All this one understands by understanding alone. Revere understanding."

Meaning today and context

Real understanding is what lets us actually grasp what we have read or experienced, including right from wrong. Collected facts become knowledge only when understood.

Chandogya 7.7.1: understanding (vijñāna) is greater than meditation, for by understanding one comes to know all the sciences, the worlds, right and wrong, food and taste, this world and the next.
