Chandogya Upanishad 7.15.2

7.15.2 Sanatkumara to Narada

स यदि पितरं वा मातरं वा भ्रातरं वा स्वसारं वाचार्यं वा ब्राह्मणं वा किंचिद्भृशमिव प्रत्याह । धिक्त्वास्त्वित्येवैनमाहुः । पितृहा वै त्वमसि मातृहा वै त्वमसि भ्रातृहा वै त्वमसि स्वसृहा वै त्वमस्याचार्यहा वै त्वमसि ब्राह्मणहा वै त्वमसीति ॥

sa yadi pitaraṃ vā mātaraṃ vā bhrātaraṃ vā svasāraṃ vācāryaṃ vā brāhmaṇaṃ vā kiṃcidbhṛśamiva pratyāha | dhiktvāstvityevainamāhuḥ | pitṛhā vai tvamasi mātṛhā vai tvamasi bhrātṛhā vai tvamasi svasṛhā vai tvamasyācāryahā vai tvamasi brāhmaṇahā vai tvamasīti ||

"If a person says something harsh to his father or mother, brother or sister, teacher or a brahmin, people say to him, 'Shame on you! You are a killer of your father, a killer of your mother, a killer of your brother, a killer of your sister, a killer of your teacher, a killer of a brahmin.'"

"यदि कोई अपने पिता, माता, भाई, बहन, आचार्य या ब्राह्मण को कुछ कठोर उत्तर दे, तो लोग उससे कहते हैं, 'तुम्हें धिक्कार है! तुम पितृघाती हो, मातृघाती हो, भ्रातृघाती हो, भगिनीघाती हो, आचार्यघाती हो, ब्राह्मणघाती हो।'"

The idiom is meant to show the weight of words, not to shame anyone in crisis. Respect for elders never means accepting abuse; for abuse, 112 / 181. 'Brahmin' means one learned and respected, never a rank by birth.

यह मुहावरा शब्दों का भार दिखाने के लिए है, संकट में किसी को लज्जित करने के लिए नहीं। बड़ों का सम्मान करने का अर्थ दुर्व्यवहार सहना नहीं है; दुर्व्यवहार में 112 / 181 पर संपर्क करें। 'ब्राह्मण' का अर्थ विद्वान और सम्मानित है, जन्म से कोई ऊँचा पद नहीं।

Meaning today and contextआज के लिए अर्थ और संदर्भ

Harsh words to the living wound them, and the old idiom treats such speech almost as violence. How we speak to family and teachers while they are alive matters deeply.

जीवितों से कहे गए कठोर शब्द उन्हें घायल करते हैं, और पुरानी कहावत ऐसी वाणी को लगभग हिंसा मानती है। परिवार और गुरुजनों से, जब तक वे जीवित हैं, हम कैसे बोलते हैं, यह बहुत मायने रखता है।

Chandogya 7.15.2: Sanatkumāra illustrates prāṇa: if someone answers a living father, mother, brother, sister, teacher or brahmin harshly, people say 'Shame on you; you are a killer of your father…'.
