Chandogya Upanishad 7.22.1

7.22.1 Sanatkumara to Narada

yadā vai sukhaṃ labhate'tha karoti | nāsukhaṃ labdhvā karoti | sukhameva labdhvā karoti | sukhaṃ tveva vijijñāsitavyamiti | sukhaṃ bhagavo vijijñāsa iti ||

"When one finds happiness, then one acts. Without finding happiness one does not act; only on finding happiness does one act. But it is happiness itself that one must seek to understand." "Sir, I seek to understand happiness."

Meaning today and context

Behind every action is a search for happiness. So the most important question is what happiness really is; get that wrong and every effort goes in the wrong direction.

Chandogya 7.22.1: one acts only when one finds happiness (sukha) in it; so happiness must be sought.
