Chandogya Upanishad 6.4.1

6.4.1 Uddalaka Aruni to Shvetaketu

yadagne rohitaṃ rūpaṃ tejasastadrūpam | yacchuklaṃ tadapām | yatkṛṣṇaṃ tadannasya | apāgādagneragnitvam | vācārambhaṇaṃ vikāro nāmadheyaṃ trīṇi rūpāṇītyeva satyam ||

"The red form of fire is the form of heat; the white, of water; the dark, of food. Thus the 'fire-ness' has gone from fire: the change is only a matter of words, a name; the truth is just 'three forms'."

Meaning today and context

When we look closely, a thing that seemed to be one separate object turns out to be made of other things. Names are useful labels, not the final truth.

Chandogya 6.4.1: Uddālaka shows that each bright thing is only the three elements: red = heat, white = water, dark = food (earth). First example: fire.
