Chandogya Upanishad 6.4.4

6.4.4 Uddalaka Aruni to Shvetaketu

yadvidyuto rohitaṃ rūpaṃ tejasastadrūpam | yacchuklaṃ tadapām | yatkṛṣṇaṃ tadannasya | apāgādvidyuto vidyuttvam | vācārambhaṇaṃ vikāro nāmadheyaṃ trīṇi rūpāṇītyeva satyam ||

"The red form of lightning is the form of heat; the white, of water; the dark, of food. Thus the 'lightning-ness' has gone from lightning: the change is only a matter of words, a name; the truth is just 'three forms'."

Meaning today and context

Even the most sudden and dazzling event is made of the same few elements. What startles us is less separate than it seems.

Chandogya 6.4.4: Uddālaka shows that each bright thing is only the three elements: red = heat, white = water, dark = food (earth). Fourth example: lightning.
