"Next, the teaching in terms of the Self: the Self alone is below, the Self is above, the Self is behind, the Self is in front, the Self is to the south, the Self is to the north. The Self alone is all this. One who sees this, thinks this, understands this, delights in the Self, plays in the Self, has union in the Self, has joy in the Self; he becomes self-ruled, and he moves freely in all worlds. But those who understand it otherwise are ruled by others; their worlds perish, and they cannot move freely in any world."

Joy in the Self is not a reason to withdraw from family, friends or care; it lets us love without clinging.

Meaning today and context

When our joy depends on things and people outside us, we are ruled by them. Finding a source of joy within makes us our own master and frees us to meet the world without clinging.

Chandogya 7.25.2: the teaching in terms of the Self: the Self is everywhere and is all this. One who sees this delights in the Self and becomes self-ruled (svarāṭ); those who know otherwise are ruled by others.
