'... so, just as here a world won by work comes to an end, so in the hereafter a world won by merit comes to an end. Those who leave this world without having found the Self and these real desires have no freedom in any world. But those who leave this world having found the Self and these real desires move freely in all worlds.'
Meaning today and context
Whatever we earn by effort, money, status or even good deeds, eventually runs out. Real freedom comes from knowing who we are, not from what we have accumulated.
Chandogya 8.1.6: completing the comparison, the teacher says every world gained by deeds runs out; only those who know the Self are free everywhere.
