Chandogya Upanishad 8.2.2

8.2.2 Upanishadic seer

atha yadi mātṛlokakāmo bhavati | saṃkalpādevāsya mātaraḥ samuttiṣṭhanti | tena mātṛlokena saṃpanno mahīyate ||

And if he wishes for the world of the mothers, by his intention alone his mothers rise up before him. Having gained that world of the mothers, he is glad and honoured.

Grief for a mother is real and should be honoured. This verse describes the freedom of one who knows the Self; it is not a promise of reunion. If the pain is too heavy, call Tele-MANAS 14416.

Meaning today and context

The bond with a mother is among the deepest we know, and the Upanishad names it among the joys of one who is whole. It speaks of fullness, not of bringing back the dead.

Chandogya 8.2.2: the list continues with the world of mothers.
