Chandogya Upanishad 8.3.2

8.3.2 Upanishadic seer

atha ye cāsyeha jīvā ye ca pretā yaccānyadicchanna labhate sarvaṃ tadatra gatvā vindate | atra hyasyaite satyāḥ kāmā anṛtāpidhānāḥ | tadyathāpi hiraṇyanidhiṃ nihitamakṣetrajñā uparyupari sañcaranto na vindeyuḥ | evamevemāḥ sarvāḥ prajā aharahargacchantya etaṃ brahmalokaṃ na vindantyanṛtena hi pratyūḍhāḥ ||

And those of his people who are alive here, and those who have departed, and whatever else he wishes for and does not get: all of that he finds by going there, for there are these real desires of his, covered by the unreal. Just as people who do not know the ground might walk again and again over a hidden store of gold and never find it, so all these creatures go day after day into this world of Brahman and do not find it, for they are carried off course by the unreal.

Meaning today and context

What we search for outside is already within us, as close as gold under our feet. We pass over it every day, in sleep and in quiet moments, because our attention is pulled elsewhere.

Chandogya 8.3.2: the teacher says all we long for, the living and the departed, is found within, and gives the image of people walking over buried gold without finding it.
