Now, the Self is a dam, a support that keeps these worlds from falling into confusion. Day and night do not cross this dam, nor old age, nor death, nor sorrow, nor good deeds. All evils turn back from it, for this world of Brahman is free from evil.
Meaning today and context
Our days are pushed around by time, ageing, loss and the weight of what we have done. The Self is described as the one thing none of these can cross, a ground that stays steady when everything else moves.
Chandogya 8.4.1: the teacher calls the Self a dam or embankment that holds the worlds apart, untouched by time, age, death, sorrow or deeds.
