What people call the long sacrificial session (sattrāyaṇa) is really brahmacarya, for through brahmacarya one finds protection (trāṇa) in the real (sat) Self. And what people call silence (mauna) is really brahmacarya, for only after finding the Self through brahmacarya does one truly reflect (manute).
Brahmacarya here is the disciplined life of a student devoted to learning; it is not a demand for celibacy or self-denial for householders.
Meaning today and context
Silence is not just not speaking; it is the reflection that comes from a disciplined inner life. Real protection comes from being grounded in oneself.
Chandogya 8.5.2: the wordplay continues: the long sacrificial session and the vow of silence are also really brahmacarya.
