Chandogya Upanishad 8.5.3

8.5.3 Upanishadic seer

atha yadanāśakāyanamityācakṣate brahmacaryameva tat | eṣa hyātmā na naśyati yaṃ brahmacaryeṇānuvindate | atha yadaraṇyāyanamityācakṣate brahmacaryameva tat | tataraśca ha vai ṇyaścārṇavau brahmaloke tṛtīyasyāmito divi | tadairaṃmadīyaṃ saraḥ | tadaśvatthaḥ somasavanaḥ | tadaparājitā pūrbrahmaṇaḥ prabhuvimitaṃ hiraṇmayam ||

What people call the course of fasting (anāśakāyana) is really brahmacarya, for the Self that one finds through brahmacarya does not perish (na naśyati). And what people call life in the forest (araṇyāyana) is really brahmacarya. In the world of Brahman, in the third heaven from here, are the two seas Ara and Ṇya; there is the lake Airaṃmadīya; there is the fig tree that drips soma; there is Brahman's city Aparājitā, the unconquered, and the golden hall built by the Lord.

Fasting is reinterpreted here as inner discipline; this is not dietary or medical advice. Brahmacarya is the student's disciplined life, not a demand for celibacy for householders, and forest life is not advice to leave family or work.

Meaning today and context

Fasting and retreat to the forest are reinterpreted as the inner discipline of learning. What is found that way, the Self, does not perish.

Chandogya 8.5.3: the wordplay continues with fasting and life in the forest, then describes the world of Brahman: the two seas Ara and Ṇya, a lake, a soma-dripping fig tree and the unconquered city.
