8.7.4 Prajapati to Indra and Virochana

tau ha prajāpatiruvāca ya eṣo'kṣiṇi puruṣo dṛṣyata eṣa ātmeti hovāca | etadamṛtamabhayametadbrahmeti | atha yo'yaṃ bhagavo'psu parikhyāyate yaścāyamādarśe katama eṣa iti | eṣa u evaiṣu sarveṣvannteṣu parikhyāyata iti hovāca ||

Prajāpati said to them, 'The person who is seen in the eye: that is the Self,' he said. 'That is the immortal, the fearless; that is Brahman.' 'Then, sir, the one that is seen in water and the one in a mirror, which is that?' 'It is this same one who is seen in all these surfaces,' he said.

Meaning today and context

Prajāpati points to the seer behind the eye, but the students hear 'the image in the eye'. We easily mistake what we see of ourselves for who we are.

Chandogya 8.7.4: Prajāpati gives his first teaching, 'the person seen in the eye is the Self'; the students take it to mean the reflection seen in water or a mirror.
