Chandogya Upanishad 8.8.5

8.8.5 Upanishadic seer

tasmādapyaddyehādadānamaśraddadhānamayajamānamāhurāsuro bateti | asurāṇāṃ hyeṣopaniṣat | pretasya śarīraṃ bhikṣayā vasanenālaṃkāreṇeti saṃskurvanti | etena hyamuṃ lokaṃ jeṣyanto manyante ||

That is why, even today, people say of someone here who does not give, who has no faith and does not offer sacrifice, 'Alas, he is an asura!' For this is the doctrine of the asuras. They adorn the body of a dead person with food received as alms, with clothing and with ornaments, for they think that by this they will win that world.

'Asura' here names the body-centred view, not a group of people; do not use it to label anyone. Funeral customs described here are of their time; how families honour their dead is not being judged today.

Meaning today and context

Living only for the body tends to make a person ungenerous and without faith in anything larger. The text links stinginess and self-absorption to this mistaken view of the self.

Chandogya 8.8.5: the Upanishad explains that the ungenerous and faithless are still called 'asura', and that the asuras' custom of adorning corpses comes from this body-centred doctrine.
