But Indra, even before he reached the gods, saw this danger: 'Just as this self is well adorned when this body is well adorned, finely dressed when it is finely dressed, groomed when it is groomed, so too it will be blind when the body is blind, lame when it is lame, crippled when it is crippled. It will perish as soon as this body perishes. I see nothing worthwhile in this.'
Meaning today and context
Indra does not settle for a comfortable answer; he thinks it through and sees it cannot be true. If who we are rises and falls with the body, then ageing and illness would be the end of us. Honest questioning is part of wisdom.
Chandogya 8.9.1: on his way back, before reaching the gods, Indra sees the flaw in the teaching: a self that changes with the body would also go blind, lame and perish with it.
