8.10.1 Prajapati to Indra

ya eṣa svapne mahīyamānaścaratyeṣa ātmeti hovāca | etadamṛtamabhayametadbrahmeti | sa ha śāntahṛdayaḥ pravavrāja | sa hāprāpyaiva devānetadbhayaṃ dadarśa | tadyadyapīdaṃ śarīramandhaṃ bhavatyanandhaḥ sa bhavati yadi srāmamasrāmaḥ | naivaiṣo'sya doṣeṇa duṣyati ||

'The one who moves about in dreams, enjoying himself: that is the Self,' he said. 'That is the immortal, the fearless; that is Brahman.' Indra went away content at heart. But even before he reached the gods he saw this danger: 'Now, even if this body is blind, that one is not blind; if it is lame, he is not lame. He is not harmed by its defects.'

Meaning today and context

The dreaming mind is freer than the body, but it is not yet the whole truth. Each stage of understanding is a step, not the end.

Chandogya 8.10.1: Prajāpati's second teaching: the one who moves about in dreams is the Self. Indra leaves content, but again sees a problem on the way.
