Chandogya Upanishad 8.10.2

8.10.2 Prajapati to Indra

na vadhenāsya hanyate | nāsya srāmyeṇa srāmaḥ | ghnanti tvevainam | vicchādayantīva | apriyavetteva bhavati | api roditīva nāhamatra bhogyaṃ paśyāmīti ||

'He is not killed when the body is killed, nor lamed by its lameness. And yet it is as if they kill him, as if they strip him; he seems to feel what is unpleasant; he even seems to weep. I see nothing worthwhile in this.'

Meaning today and context

Our inner world can torment us even when nothing is wrong outside: in dreams, and in anxious thoughts, we suffer what is not happening. The mind's experiences are not the deepest self either.

Chandogya 8.10.2: Indra's reflection continues: the dream self is not harmed by the body, yet in dreams it seems to be struck, chased and to weep.
