'Now, where the eye is turned toward space, there is the person in the eye; the eye is for seeing. The one who knows "let me smell this" is the Self; the nose is for smelling. The one who knows "let me speak this" is the Self; speech is for speaking. The one who knows "let me hear this" is the Self; the ear is for hearing.'
Meaning today and context
Behind every act of seeing, hearing and speaking there is the one who knows it is happening. That knower, not the senses or what they take in, is who we are.
Chandogya 8.12.4: Prajāpati explains that the Self is the knower behind the senses: the eye, nose, speech and ear are its instruments.
