8.12.5 Prajapati to Indra

atha yo vededaṃ manvānīti sa ātmā | mano'sya daivaṃ cakṣuḥ | sa vā eṣa etena daivena cakṣuṣā manasaitānkāmānpaśyanramate ya ete brahmaloke ||

'The one who knows "let me think this" is the Self; the mind is its divine eye. With this divine eye, the mind, he sees these desires that are in the world of Brahman, and rejoices.'

Meaning today and context

Even thinking is something the Self knows, not what the Self is. The mind is a precious instrument, a 'divine eye'; we are the one who looks through it.

Chandogya 8.12.5: Prajāpati says the one who knows 'let me think this' is the Self; the mind is its divine eye, with which it sees and enjoys the desires in the world of Brahman.
