Chandogya Upanishad 8.15.1

8.15.1 Upanishadic seer

taddhaitadbrahmā prajāpataya uvāca prajāpatirmanave manuḥ prajābhyaḥ | ācāryakulādvedamadhītya yathāvidhānaṃ guroḥ karmātiśeṣeṇābhisamāvṛtya kuṭumbe śucau deśe svādhyāyamadhīyāno dharmikānvidadhadātmani sarvendriyāṇi saṃpratiṣṭhāpyāhiṃsansarvabhūtānyanyatra tīrthebhyaḥ | sa khalvevaṃ vartayanyāvadāyuṣaṃ brahmalokamabhisaṃpadyate | na ca punarāvartate na ca punarāvartate ||

Brahmā taught this to Prajāpati, Prajāpati to Manu, Manu to all creatures. One who has learned the Veda in a teacher's household according to rule, in the time left over from work done for the teacher; who has returned home and, in his own household, in a clean place, keeps up his study of the Veda; who raises up people devoted to dharma; who has drawn all his senses back into the Self; who harms no living being except at the sacred places (tīrthas): one who lives this way all his life reaches the world of Brahman, and does not return again, does not return again.

'Except at the sacred places' refers to the ritual sacrifice of its time; it is not an exception to non-harm today. Learning the Veda at a teacher's home is open by conduct and dedication, never restricted by birth.

Meaning today and context

The Upanishad ends not with a hermit but with a householder: one who keeps learning all their life, raises good people, masters the senses and harms no one. An ordinary life lived this way is itself the path.

Chandogya 8.15.1, the last passage of the Upanishad: the teaching's lineage (Brahmā to Prajāpati to Manu to humankind), and the life of the householder who, living rightly to the end, reaches the world of Brahman.
