Hitopadesha Pr.13

Pr.13 Narayana

ajāta-mṛta-mūrkhāṇāṃ varamādyau na cāntimaḥ | sakṛdduḥkha-karāvādyāvantimastu pade pade ||

Of a son unborn, a son who died, and a son who is a fool, the first two are better, not the last: the first two cause grief once, the last at every step.

Never quote this to bereaved parents or about any child. Every child's life is precious; the verse is a king's exaggerated lament. Tele-MANAS 14416.

Meaning today and context

These are the words of a frustrated father in a story, speaking in exaggeration. They show how deeply a parent can worry, not how anyone should regard a child.

King Sudarshana, despairing over his untaught sons, continues his bitter reflection.
