Hitopadesha 1.1

1.1 Narayana

kāvya-śāstra-vinodena kālo gacchati dhīmatām | vyasanena tu mūrkhāṇāṃ nidrayā kalahena vā ||

The wise pass their time in the delight of poetry and learning; fools pass it in vice, in sleep, or in quarrelling.

Meaning today and context

How we fill our free hours slowly shapes who we become. Time given to reading, learning and good stories builds us; time lost to bad habits, oversleeping and arguments wears us down.

Opening Book 1 (Winning Friends), the sage Viṣṇuśarman, seated on the palace terrace with the king's idle sons, tells them how the wise and the foolish spend their time.
