Hitopadesha 1.114

1.114 Narayana

uttamasyāpi varṇasya nīco'pi gṛhamāgataḥ | pūjanīyo yathā-yogyaṃ sarva-deva-mayo'tithiḥ ||

Even if one of humble station comes to the house of one of the highest class, he is to be honoured as befits him: a guest embodies all the gods.

The words 'highest class' and 'humble' reflect the social order of the time; the verse's point is that every person deserves respect. Worth is never by birth or caste.

Meaning today and context

Hospitality does not depend on the guest's status. Whoever comes to us deserves dignity and care, however society ranks them.

Another maxim on hospitality, as the tortoise honours the mouse.
