adṛṣṭi-dānaṃ kṛta-pūrva-nāśanam | ānanaṃ duścaritānukīrtanam | kathā-prasaṅgena ca nāma-vismṛtir | virakta-bhāvasya janasya lakṣaṇam ||

Not looking at you, wiping out past kindness, a face that dwells on your misdeeds, forgetting your name in the middle of conversation: these are the signs of a person whose affection has gone.

Meaning today and context

When someone stops looking at you, forgets what you've done for them and keeps bringing up your faults, the relationship is cooling. Better to notice and talk about it than ignore it. In the story, though, the friend was only distracted, so check before concluding.

Vīṇākarṇa goes on, complaining that his distracted friend Cūḍākarṇa has lost interest in him.
