Hitopadesha 1.125

1.125 Narayana

manasvī mriyate kāmaṃ kārpaṇyaṃ na tu gacchati | api nirvāṇamāyāti nānalo yāti śītatām ||

A high-spirited person may well die, but will not stoop to wretchedness: fire may go out, but it never turns cold.

This is a fable's maxim about self-respect, not advice about life and death. If you feel that dying would be better than your present situation, please talk to someone now: Tele-MANAS 14416 (free, 24x7).

Meaning today and context

Self-respect is worth guarding even in hard times; you can lose money or position without giving up your dignity. Asking for help when needed is not the 'wretchedness' meant here.

Hiraṇyaka continues reflecting: a self-respecting creature would rather perish than live by abject dependence.
