Hitopadesha 1.126

1.126 Narayana

kusuma-stavakasyeva dve vṛttī tu manasvinaḥ | sarveṣāṃ mūrdhni vā tiṣṭhedviśīryeta vane'thavā ||

Like a cluster of flowers, a high-spirited person has only two courses: either to stand at the head of all, or to wither away in the forest.

Meaning today and context

The verse praises refusing to live as someone's plaything. Today it can mean choosing quiet independence over a prominent but humiliating position.

Hiraṇyaka continues: the self-respecting have only two paths.
