Hitopadesha 1.130

1.130 Narayana

varaṃ maunaṃ kāryaṃ na ca vacanamuktaṃ yadanṛtaṃ | varaṃ klaibyaṃ puṃsāṃ na ca para-kalatrābhigamanam | varaṃ prāṇa-tyāgo na ca piśuna-vākyeṣvabhirucir | varaṃ bhikṣāśitvaṃ na ca para-dhanāsvādana-sukham ||

Better to keep silent than speak words that are false; better for a man to be impotent than go to another's wife; better to give up one's life than take pleasure in slanderous talk; better to live on alms than enjoy the taste of another's wealth.

This is a fable's maxim about self-respect, not advice about life and death. If you feel that dying would be better than your present situation, please talk to someone now: Tele-MANAS 14416 (free, 24x7).

Meaning today and context

A strong statement of priorities: silence over lies, restraint over betrayal, avoiding gossip, and honest want over living on what isn't yours. The 'better to die' line is emphasis, not a literal instruction.

Hiraṇyaka goes on, naming things that are worse than poverty or hardship.
