Hitopadesha 1.131

1.131 Narayana

varaṃ śūnyā śālā na ca khalu varo duṣṭa-vṛṣabho | varaṃ veśyā patnī na punaravinītā kula-vadhūḥ | varaṃ vāso'raṇye na punaravivekādhipa-pure | varaṃ prāṇa-tyāgo na punaradhamānāmupagamaḥ ||

Better an empty stall than a vicious bull; better a courtesan for a wife than an unruly wife of good family; better to live in the forest than in the city of an undiscerning king; better to give up one's life than to approach base people.

The line about wives reflects the prejudices of its time and is not this app's view; it must never be used to demean, distrust or control women. 'Better to give up one's life' is rhetoric: if you feel that way, call Tele-MANAS 14416.

Some lines still make a fair point (better to be alone than in harmful company, better to leave than serve a foolish ruler), but the verse as a whole reflects the prejudices of its time.

Hiraṇyaka continues with a string of 'better this than that' comparisons.
