The sick man, the long exile, one who eats others' food, one who sleeps in others' houses: his life is death, and his death is his rest.

Meaning today and context
The verse voices how heavy chronic illness, long displacement and dependence can feel. Today it calls for compassion and support for such people, not the conclusion that their lives are worth less.
Hiraṇyaka asks himself whether he should live on others' food, and calls that a second door to death.
