tyajedekaṃ kulasyārthe grāmasyārthe kulaṃ tyajet | grāmaṃ janapadasyārthe ātmārthe pṛthivīṃ tyajet ||
For the sake of the family one should give up one person; for the village, the family; for the country, the village; for one's own self, the whole earth.
This political maxim is not a licence to cast out, sacrifice or harm any person; it is about weighing priorities and, in the story, leaving a harmful place.
Meaning today and context
A maxim about priorities when interests conflict: the larger good over the smaller, and one's own survival or integrity over all possessions. In the story it means leaving a place that is destroying him.
Hiraṇyaka gives this maxim as he resolves to leave that place for his own good.
