1.145 Narayana

varaṃ vanaṃ vyāghra-gajendra-sevitaṃ | drumālayaḥ patra-phalāmbu-bhakṣitam | tṛṇāni śayyā vasanaṃ ca valkalaṃ | na bandhu-madhye dhana-hīna-jīvanam ||

Better a forest haunted by tigers and great elephants, a tree for a house, leaves, fruit and water for food, grass for a bed and bark for clothing, than a life without money among one's relatives.

This voices the shame of poverty in a story; it is not advice to cut yourself off. Losing money is no disgrace. If shame or hopelessness feels too heavy, talk to someone you trust or call Tele-MANAS 14416.

It names a real pain: losing money and then feeling small in front of family can hurt more than hardship itself. The verse speaks that feeling honestly; it is not a rule that a poor person should withdraw from family.

The mouse Hiraṇyaka tells the crow Laghupatanaka and the tortoise Mantharaka why, after losing his hoard, he left his kin for this lonely forest.
