Water, fire, poison, a weapon, hunger, disease, a fall from a mountain: finding some cause or other, the embodied being is parted from life.

Meaning today and context

Life is fragile and its end can come from anywhere, as it did for the hunter who thought he had won. It is a reason for humility and for living well now, not for fear.

In Mantharaka's tale, the hunter Bhairava kills a deer and then a boar, but the dying boar gores him; the narrator reflects on how suddenly death comes.
