A gift given simply because it ought to be given, to one who can do nothing in return, at the right place, the right time and to a worthy person: that gift is known as sāttvika, pure.
Meaning today and context
The best giving expects nothing back, not even a favour later, and is done thoughtfully: to the right person, at the right time. Generosity with an eye on returns is a trade, not a gift.
The tiger quotes a verse (also found in the Bhagavad Gītā, 17.20) on the purest kind of giving.
