Hitopadesha 1.163

1.163 Narayana

nāprāpyamabhivāñchanti naṣṭaṃ necchanti śocitum | āpatsvapi na muhyanti narāḥ paṇḍita-buddhayaḥ ||

People of wise understanding do not long for what cannot be had, do not wish to grieve over what is lost, and do not lose their heads even in misfortune.

Grief after a loss is natural and needs time; this is not a reason to dismiss mourning, yours or anyone else's.

Meaning today and context

After a loss it is natural to grieve; the verse asks us not to stay stuck there, nor to chase what is truly out of reach, and to keep a clear head when things go wrong.

Mantharaka tells Hiraṇyaka there is no use dwelling on what is past.
