Hitopadesha 1.17

1.17 Narayana

na dharma-śāstraṃ paṭhatīti kāraṇaṃ | na cāpi vedādhyayanaṃ durātmanaḥ | svabhāva evātra tathātiricyate | yathā prakṛtyā madhuraṃ gavāṃ payaḥ ||

That a wicked person reads the law books is no reason to trust him, nor is his study of the Vedas; here it is nature that prevails, just as cow's milk is sweet by its very nature.

Meaning today and context

Someone who quotes scripture or talks about values is not thereby trustworthy. Watch how a person habitually behaves; that is their nature, and it outweighs their words.

Stuck in the mud and seized by the tiger, the traveller realises too late that the tiger's quoting of scripture meant nothing.
