Hitopadesha 1.176

1.176 Narayana

rājataḥ salilādagneścorataḥ svajanādapi | bhayamarthavatāṃ nityaṃ mṛtyoḥ prāṇa-bhṛtāmiva ||

From the king, from water, from fire, from thieves, even from their own kin, the wealthy are always in fear, as living beings are always in fear of death.

Meaning today and context

The more you own, the more you have to worry about: taxes, disasters, theft and even family quarrels over property. Wealth and worry tend to grow together.

Mantharaka continues on the fears that come with wealth.
