Meaning today and context

The qualities listed are a fair picture of a good leader: integrity, presence, fairness and practical judgment. But in the story they are flattery used as bait, so beware of praise that offers you a position too easily.

In Hiraṇyaka's tale, a cunning old jackal flatters the elephant Karpūratilaka, pretending the forest animals want to crown him king, so as to lure him into a swamp.
