A friend is an elixir of love, a delight to the eyes and to the heart, a vessel equally for joy and sorrow; such a one is won only by a person of merit. Other 'friends', eager for your money in times of plenty, are met everywhere; but misfortune is the touchstone that tests their truth.
Meaning today and context
Many people gather around you when things go well; hard times show who really cares. A friend who shares both your joys and your sorrows is a gift.
Hiraṇyaka continues praising true friendship, contrasting it with fair-weather friends.
