Food well digested, a son of good judgement, a well-guided wife, a king well served, words spoken after careful thought, a deed done after careful reflection: these do not go wrong even over a very long time.
'A well-guided wife' reflects the household norms of its time; it is not a licence to control a spouse.
Meaning today and context
Things done with care hold up over time: a decision you thought through, words you weighed before saying, relationships you tended. Hasty choices are the ones that come back to trouble us.
