īrṣyī ghṛṇī tvasantuṣṭaḥ krodhano nitya-śaṅkitaḥ | para-bhāgyopajīvī ca ṣaḍete nitya-duḥkhitāḥ ||
The envious, the fastidious, the discontented, the angry, the ever-suspicious, and one who lives off another's fortune: these six are forever miserable.
Meaning today and context
Much unhappiness is self-made: comparing ourselves with others, finding fault with everything, never being satisfied, flaring up, distrusting everyone, or depending on someone else for our living. Each of these can be worked on. (In the story it is said to brush off a real warning, so 'suspicion' here is not the same as prudence.)
The proud pigeon, mocking Citragrīva's suspicion of the scattered rice, quotes this verse naming six kinds of people who are always unhappy.
