Hitopadesha 1.28

1.28 Narayana

asaṃbhavaṃ hema-mṛgasya janma | tathāpi rāmo lulubhe mṛgāya | prāyaḥ samāpanna-vipatti-kāle | dhiyo'pi puṃsāṃ malinā bhavanti ||

A golden deer could never be born; yet Rāma longed for that deer. Usually, when misfortune is approaching, even the minds of men grow clouded.

Even the best of us chase things that make no sense, especially when we are stressed or in a bad phase. If something looks impossibly good, pause; that is exactly when judgement slips.

The narrator adds the example of Rāma and the golden deer, as the pigeons are about to be caught.
