Hitopadesha 1.36

1.36 Narayana

saṃhatiḥ śreyasī puṃsāṃ svakulairalpakairapi | tuṣeṇāpi parityaktā na prarohanti taṇḍulāḥ ||

Unity is best for people, even with their own small kin; rice grains, once parted even from their husk, do not sprout.

Meaning today and context

Even weak or ordinary family ties protect us, the way a husk lets a grain grow. Cutting ourselves off from our people, however small they seem, leaves us more exposed.

Citragrīva adds a second verse on unity; persuaded, the pigeons rise together with the net.
