Hitopadesha 1.52

1.52 Narayana

vyomaikānta-vihāriṇo'pi vihagāḥ samprāpnuvantyāpadaṃ | badhyante nipuṇairagādha-salilānmatsyāḥ samudrādapi | durnītaṃ kimihāsti kiṃ sucaritaṃ kaḥ sthāna-lābhe guṇaḥ | kālo hi vyasana-prasārita-karo gṛhṇāti dūrādapi ||

Birds, though they roam alone in the open sky, meet with disaster; fish are caught by the skilful even from the bottomless sea. What here is bad conduct, what is good conduct, what good is a safe place? Time, its hand stretched out with misfortune, seizes even from afar.

Meaning today and context

No position is so safe that trouble cannot reach it. When misfortune comes despite your care, it need not mean you did something wrong; the verse speaks to self-blame, not against being careful.

Hiraṇyaka's third consolation to the pigeon king: time catches every creature, wherever it hides.
