1.55 Narayana

bhakṣya-bhakṣakayoḥ prītirvipatteḥ kāraṇaṃ matam | śṛgālātpāśabaddho'sau mṛgaḥ kākena rakṣitaḥ ||

Affection between the eaten and the eater is held to be the cause of disaster: the deer caught in a snare because of a jackal was saved by a crow.

Meaning today and context

A friendship where one side secretly profits from the other's harm is dangerous, however warm it looks. Real friends, like the crow in the story, help without wanting anything from your loss.

Hiraṇyaka gives the crow a second reason for refusing and introduces the tale of the deer, the jackal and the crow.
