Hitopadesha 1.7

1.7 Narayana

na saṃśayamanāruhya naro bhadrāṇi paśyati | saṃśayaṃ punarāruhya yadi jīvati paśyati ||

Without stepping into risk, a man sees no good fortune; but having stepped into risk, he sees it only if he lives.

Not financial advice, and not encouragement to take dangerous gambles; in the story this reasoning leads to the traveller's death.

Meaning today and context

Growth does involve risk, but the second half is a warning: a risk is worth it only if you survive it. In the story the man uses the first half to excuse his greed and ignores the second.

The greedy traveller talks himself into the risk: every effort to gain wealth involves doubt, he reasons, and quotes this saying. He then trusts the tiger and is killed.
