1.77 Narayana

dīpa-nirvāṇa-gandhaṃ ca suhṛd-vākyamarundhatīm | na jighranti na śṛṇvanti na paśyanti gatāyuṣaḥ ||

The smell of a lamp just put out, the words of a friend, and the star Arundhatī: those whose life is spent neither smell, nor hear, nor see them.

These are traditional omens, not a way to predict anyone's death. If you are worried about someone's health, seek medical help.

Meaning today and context

Old belief held that the dying cannot sense these things; the verse sets a friend's advice alongside them. Being deaf to friends who warn us is a sign that we are heading for a fall.

The crow continues reproaching the deer for ignoring his advice.
