Hitopadesha 1.88

1.88 Narayana

mārjāro mahiṣo meṣaḥ kākaḥ kāpuruṣastathā | viśvāsātprabhavantyete viśvāsastatra no hitaḥ ||

The cat, the buffalo, the ram, the crow and the coward: these get the upper hand through others' trust; trusting them is not wise.

Meaning today and context

Some people gain power over you only once you let your guard down. Notice who becomes dangerous precisely when trusted, and be measured with them.

Hiraṇyaka replies that the crow is fickle and friendship with the fickle should be avoided.
