Hitopadesha 1.89

1.89 Narayana

śatruṇā na hi sandadhyātsaṃśliṣṭenāpi sandhinā | sutaptamapi pānīyaṃ śamayatyeva pāvakam ||

Do not make a pact with an enemy, even with a close-knit treaty: water, however well heated, still puts out fire.

This is not a licence for revenge, manipulation or refusing reconciliation; it is about caution where interests truly clash. If you are in danger, call 112 (or 181 for women).

Meaning today and context

Someone whose interests run directly against yours may stay that way even after an agreement. Be careful with deals that ask you to forget a real conflict of interest; but people do change, as the crow later proves.

Hiraṇyaka adds that the crow belongs to the side of his enemies and peace should not be made with an enemy.
