Hitopadesha 1.90

1.90 Narayana

durjanaḥ parihartavyo vidyayālaṅkṛto'pi san | maṇinā bhūṣitaḥ sarpaḥ kimasau na bhayaṅkaraḥ ||

A wicked person should be avoided even if adorned with learning: is a snake decked with a jewel any less fearsome?

Meaning today and context

Degrees, titles and eloquence don't make a person safe or good. Judge by character; a brilliant person with bad intent is more dangerous, not less.

Hiraṇyaka continues explaining why he will not befriend the crow.
